Mutombo, who also played for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets, was known for his signature shot block, which he would follow up by wagging his finger and yelling, "No No No!"
An 8-time All Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, Mutombo was inducted into the Basketball of Fame in 2015. His #55 jersey was retired by both the Hawks and the Nuggers.
Off the court, Mutombo was the NBA's first Global Ambassador and renowned for his humanitarian work as much as his basketball prowess, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, his homeland.
"I had the privilege of traveling the world with Dikembe and seeing first-hand how his generosity and compassion uplifted people," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement."
He was always accessible at NBA events over the years – with his infectious smile, deep booming voice and signature finger wag that endeared him to basketball fans of every generation.
"Dikembe's indomitable spirit continues on in those who he helped and inspired throughout his extraordinary life. I am one of the many people whose lives were touched by Dikembe's big heart and I will miss him dearly."
